As part of our activities for our Pack Camp Out, the Scouts will learn about Geocaching.
Geocaching is a treasure hunting game to find hidden objects using GPS coordinates posted on a website. Our Scouts get a quick tutorial and then find some real posted Geocaches on the trails at Camp Wokanda.
How to play:
1. Go to www.geocaching.com and sign up for a free account. (Premium membership has advanced features.)
2. Search for caches around you. There are thousands all over the world.
3. Using a hand held GPS or your smart phone, navigate to the GPS point and search for the container.
4. Once you find it, mark the log with your chosen user name. Some caches have small "prizes" that can be taken in exchange for another you leave for the next person.
5. Log your find on www.geocaching.com and keep track of your adventures.
We will have everything the Scouts will need, but everyone is welcome to play along too! To prepare for our Camp Out:
1. Start an account on www.geocaching.com and pick a good user name
2. Bring a bag of about 12 small trade items. Think dollar store items. Great opportunity to get rid of extra McDonald's toys at the house. *Must be small. All of these caches are the size of a small tupperware container.
3. Download a geocaching app to your smart phone. C:geo is a good, free option. Groundspeak Geocaching app is the official app, but it requires you to be a premium member.
